Freshers Welcomed at St. Philomena College (Autonomous) with Orientation and Awareness Sessions
Puttur, June 29, 2026: St. Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, marked the commencement of the new academic year by organising a Student Welcome and Induction Programme (SIP) for newly admitted undergraduate students at the SJM Hall on the college campus.
The programme was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Rev. Fr. Dr. J. B. Saldanha, Correspondent of the College, who presided over the function.
Addressing the students, Rev. Fr. Dr. Saldanha urged them to develop the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. He encouraged students to explore opportunities within the country, cultivate intellectual competence, and shoulder responsibilities with commitment.
Emphasising the importance of self-awareness and goal-setting, he advised students to chart their own course in life and pursue their aspirations with determination. Describing education as a continuous process of expanding knowledge, he stressed the need to imbibe the cultural values and ethical traditions nurtured by one’s family. He also acknowledged the sacrifices and integrity of parents in shaping the future of their children.
College Principal Rev. Dr. Antony Prakash Monteiro stated that the institution functions with complete impartiality and does not discriminate among students on any grounds. The college, he said, recognises every individual primarily as a student and strives to mould them into responsible citizens and compassionate human beings.
Extending a warm welcome to the freshers, the Principal highlighted the institution’s distinct academic culture and rich legacy. He expressed confidence that students would experience holistic development by making the best use of the learning opportunities available and actively participating in the academic and co-curricular activities offered by the college. Such involvement, he added, would significantly enhance the value of their higher education.
Vice-Principal Dr. Vijay Kumar Moleyar presented an overview of the academic system, institutional regulations, and the functioning of the college under autonomous status, helping students familiarise themselves with the academic environment and expectations.
As part of the induction programme, officials from Fr. Patrao Hospital conducted an awareness session on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, highlighting the importance of leading a drug-free lifestyle. Representatives from the Police Department also addressed the students, sensitising them to various aspects of cybercrime, digital security, and online safety.
The programme commenced with an invocation by Ms. Sriraga, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce (M.Com.). Dr. Edwin D’Souza, Coordinator of the Student Induction Programme, welcomed the gathering and later proposed the vote of thanks. The proceedings were compered by Dr. Dimple Fernandes, Head of the Department of Hindi.
The induction programme provided the newly admitted students with an opportunity to become acquainted with the institution’s academic culture, values, and support systems, helping them begin their higher education journey with confidence and enthusiasm.
