St. Joseph’s University Launches M.Sc. in Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence

Bengaluru, July 18: The Department of Computer Science, School of Information Technology, St. Joseph’s University, Bengaluru, inaugurated its new postgraduate programme, Master of Science in Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence (M.Sc. CS & AI), on July 18, 2026, at Xavier Hall, PG Block.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sailesh A. J. Menezes, Vice President and Regional HR Leader – India, Asia Pacific and Japan at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and a distinguished alumnus of St. Joseph’s institutions. The ceremony was attended by Fr. Denzil Lobo SJ, Director, School of Information Technology; Dr. A. M. Bojamma, Dean, School of Information Technology; Dr. B. G. Prasanthi, Associate Dean and Head, Department of Computer Science; Dr. Nithya, PG Coordinator; Dr. Mrinmoyee Bhattacharya, Programme Coordinator, M.Sc. CS & AI, along with faculty members and students.

The programme began with a prayer song rendered by students Joachim and Nisha, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries and representatives of the inaugural student batch.

In his keynote address, Fr. Denzil Lobo SJ reflected on the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence, discussing the concepts of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). Referring to the views of technology leaders such as Sam Altman and Reid Hoffman, he described AI as a transformational force capable of bringing both opportunities and challenges. He emphasised that while AI can generate information and predictions, human beings must continue to exercise ethical judgement and decision-making.

Highlighting that “data is the new oil,” Fr. Denzil stressed the importance of transparency, data security and responsible innovation. He encouraged students to cultivate curiosity, embrace experimentation, learn from failure, and uphold ethical principles, reminding them that the important question is not merely whether technology can be built, but whether it should be built.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sailesh Menezes described Artificial Intelligence as a powerful force for societal good when applied responsibly. He observed that while technology itself is neutral, its impact depends on how human beings choose to use it. Speaking about the rapidly changing employment landscape, he encouraged students to become “translators” who can bridge technology with business outcomes, a skill increasingly valued by organisations worldwide.

He further emphasised that lifelong learning, curiosity, adaptability and continuous upskilling will remain the key attributes for professionals seeking to remain relevant in an AI-driven future.

During the programme, Ms. Saija Rao, a second-year M.Sc. Computer Science student, shared her experiences at St. Joseph’s University. She highlighted the vibrant student associations, outreach initiatives such as Bembala, and the unwavering support of the faculty, noting that the university had nurtured her values, confidence, independence and personal growth.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Mrinmoyee Bhattacharya, expressing gratitude to the chief guest, dignitaries, faculty members, students and all those who contributed to the successful launch of the new postgraduate programme.

The launch of the M.Sc. in Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence marks another significant milestone for St. Joseph’s University in preparing future technology professionals equipped with advanced technical expertise, ethical values and industry-relevant skills to address the challenges of an increasingly digital world.
