Thanksgiving Eucharist and Fond Farewell to Bishop Francis Serrao SJ from the Diocese of Shimoga

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the Diocese of Shimoga gathered in prayer, gratitude, and celebration to bid a heartfelt farewell to its beloved shepherd, Most Rev. Dr Francis Serrao SJ, as he prepares to assume his new pastoral responsibility as Bishop of the Diocese of Mysore on October 7, 2025, at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Mysore.
The farewell event was held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Shivamogga, and was attended by a large gathering of clergy, religious, and laity, reflecting the deep affection and esteem in which Bishop Francis is held.
The evening began with a Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist at 5:30 PM, presided over by Bishop Francis Serrao SJ and concelebrated by numerous priests of the diocese. The Mass was a moving expression of gratitude to God for the Bishop’s 11 years and 5 months of dedicated Episcopal ministry in the Diocese of Shimoga.
Following the Eucharist, a felicitation program was held in the cathedral at 7:00 PM. The program was presided over by Very Rev. Msgr Stany D’Souza, Vicar General of the Diocese, who offered a heartfelt congratulatory message on behalf of the diocesan clergy, religious, and laity.
Two significant publications were released during the event: “Karunashree” – a compilation of Bishop Francis Serrao SJ’s pastoral work and vision during his time in the Diocese, and “Hombelaku” – a commemorative souvenir dedicated to Bishop Serrao’s Episcopal journey in Shimoga. Both works were edited by Fr Franklin D’Souza, Editor of the Diocesan Magazine Hombelaku.
Ms. Lizzy, Joint Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, presented the “Sanmana Patra” (citation), recognizing the Bishop’s remarkable contributions to the diocese.
As a token of love and appreciation from the faithful, Bishop Serrao was honored with a shawl, garland, peta (traditional headgear), and fruit basket. The felicitation was conducted by Very Rev. Msgr Stany D’Souza, Vicar General; Very Rev. Fr Stephen Maxi Albuquerque, Chancellor; Mr. Anthony Wilson, Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Council; Rev. Fr Sunil Rodrigues OCD, CRI Unit President; and Sr Rita Shanti, Secretary of CRI.
In his response, Bishop Francis Serrao SJ expressed deep gratitude for the love and support he received from the people of the Diocese of Shimoga throughout his ministry. His words reflected humility, faith, and a spirit of joyful service.
Fr Veeresh Victor Moras, Master of Ceremonies and Public Relations Officer of the Diocese, offered a concise and heartfelt vote of thanks, appreciating all who contributed to the success of the event.
Many lay faithful and groups also came forward to personally felicitate the Bishop and share their memories, blessings, and prayers.
The evening concluded with a fellowship reception, where snacks and refreshments were served to all attendees.
The farewell ceremony was a dignified and warm tribute to a pastoral leader who led with wisdom, compassion, and a Christ-like spirit. As Bishop Francis Serrao SJ embarks on his new mission in the Diocese of Mysore, the faithful of Shimoga send him forth with love, blessings, and prayers for continued grace-filled service.
