Bishop Francis Serrao Appointed New Bishop of Mysore
August 15, New Delhi – His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Francis Serrao, SJ (66), as the new Bishop of Mysore. He succeeds in this role while currently serving as Bishop of Shimoga and Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Ecumenism.
Born on August 15, 1959, in Moodbidri (Mangalore Diocese), Bishop Serrao joined the Jesuits in 1979. He was ordained a priest in 1992 and became Bishop of Shimoga in 2014. His ministry spans pastoral work, education, and leadership in various Jesuit institutions across Karnataka.
He becomes the ninth Bishop of Mysore, a diocese that has been vacant since 2024. Archbishop Bernard Moras served as its administrator in the interim.
The Diocese of Mysore, established in 1886, currently serves 134,000 Catholics across Mysuru, Mandya, Kodagu, and Chamarajanagar, through 93 parishes and a strong clergy and religious presence.
