Father Muller Hospital Achieves Milestone with First Robot-Assisted Knee Replacement Surgery
Mangaluru, July 11: In a significant advancement for healthcare in the region, Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) has successfully performed its first robot-assisted total knee replacement surgery at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH), Kankanady. The landmark procedure marks a new chapter in precision orthopaedic care for patients in Coastal Karnataka.
The surgery was performed by Dr Prashant Acharya and a dedicated team of orthopaedic surgeons and anaesthetists. The patient, who had been suffering from advanced knee arthritis, is recovering well and was able to stand and begin assisted mobilisation soon after the procedure.
The robotic-assisted surgical system enables surgeons to create a patient-specific surgical plan by mapping the individual’s joint anatomy in real time. This technology allows for highly accurate implant positioning with sub-millimetre precision, optimal joint alignment, and minimal trauma to the surrounding healthy bone and soft tissues.

Hospital authorities said the adoption of this advanced robotic technology reflects Father Muller’s commitment to providing world-class, affordable healthcare through continuous innovation. According to orthopaedic specialists, patients undergoing robot-assisted knee replacement surgery generally experience reduced post-operative pain, minimal blood loss, improved implant accuracy, and a faster return to normal daily activities.
With the successful completion of its inaugural robotic knee replacement, Father Muller Medical College Hospital has officially incorporated robot-assisted joint replacement surgery into its regular orthopaedic services, making advanced joint reconstruction more accessible to patients across Coastal Karnataka and neighbouring regions.
