World Day of the Poor Observed at St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Jeppu
Mangaluru, 16 December: St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Jeppu, a key charitable wing of the Diocese of Mangalore, meaningfully observed the World Day of the Poor with prayer, fellowship, and cultural celebration—reflecting the Church’s enduring mission to uphold the dignity of the poor and the abandoned.
The day began with a Thanksgiving Holy Mass offered in the various chapels of the Institute by Rev. Fr J. B. Crasta, Director, along with Rev. Fr Gilbert D’Souza, Rev. Fr Nelson Oliver, and Rev. Fr Vivian Rodriguez. The Eucharist was celebrated in gratitude for God’s blessings on all benefactors, residents, collaborators, and caregivers who support the mission entrusted to the Ashram.
Following the Mass, a cultural get-together was organised for the residents of St Anthony’s Poor Home. The programme was presided over by Rev. Fr J. B. Crasta, with Rev. Fr Praveen Martis serving as the Chief Guest.
In his message, Rev. Fr Crasta emphasised that the poor are precious in the sight of God and reminded the gathering that Sacred Scripture consistently highlights the struggles, faith, and dignity of the poor. He noted that St Anthony’s Poor Home is a visible sign of God’s compassion—offering care, shelter, and hope to the needy and the abandoned—an important ministry of the Diocese carried out through this Ashram.
Residents participated joyfully in various competitions and cultural performances, showcasing their talents. Students of St Anthony’s Institutions extended their support throughout the programme. A graceful welcome dance by Ashine set a joyful tone for the event.
Rev. Fr Vivian Rodriguez compered the programme and delivered the welcome address as well as the vote of thanks, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the celebration.
The event concluded with a renewed call to Christian compassion, solidarity, and service. Echoing the theme of the day, the celebration affirmed the message that “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord” (Proverbs 19:17), reminding all that service to the poor is service rendered to Christ Himself.
