St Joseph Engineering College Achieves Prestigious NBA Tier-I Accreditation for Three Engineering Programmes
First Autonomous Engineering College in Dakshina Kannada to Earn the Distinction
Mangaluru, June 2026: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, has achieved a significant milestone in its pursuit of academic excellence with three of its undergraduate programmes receiving the prestigious Tier-I Accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi.
The accreditation has been awarded to the undergraduate programmes in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) under the NBA Tier-I July 2024 Accreditation Framework.
The recognition follows a comprehensive assessment conducted by an NBA Expert Team during its visit to the institution from May 8 to 10, 2026. Based on the team’s recommendations and the approval of the competent authority of NBA, the three programmes have been accredited for the period from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028.
With this achievement, St Joseph Engineering College becomes the first autonomous engineering college in Dakshina Kannada district to secure NBA Tier-I Accreditation, reaffirming its commitment to academic quality, innovation, industry relevance, and continuous improvement.

NBA accreditation is regarded as one of the most significant quality benchmarks in technical education in India. Tier-I accreditation is conferred on programmes offered by autonomous institutions that demonstrate excellence in curriculum design, teaching-learning processes, student outcomes, governance, research, industry engagement, and quality assurance mechanisms.
The accreditation also enhances the global recognition of graduates from these programmes, particularly in countries that are signatories to the Washington Accord, an international agreement that promotes the mutual recognition of engineering qualifications.
The NBA evaluation team commended the institution for its strong academic ecosystem, modern infrastructure, committed management, qualified faculty members, impressive student achievements, industry collaborations, and effective implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) practices. OBE has become a cornerstone of engineering education quality assurance in India since the country became a signatory to the Washington Accord in 2014.
The accredited programmes at SJEC have a long-standing tradition of academic quality. They were first accredited under the OBE framework in 2013 and have successfully maintained their accreditation status through successive evaluation cycles. The latest Tier-I accreditation further strengthens their reputation as programmes committed to sustained excellence and continuous enhancement.
Established in 2002, St Joseph Engineering College is currently celebrating 25 years of excellence in engineering education. The institution, which enjoys autonomous status under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), has emerged as one of the most sought-after engineering colleges in coastal Karnataka.
Over the years, SJEC has built a reputation for providing quality education through its vibrant academic environment, state-of-the-art facilities, experienced faculty, strong industry partnerships, excellent placement opportunities, and active encouragement of technical, cultural, sports, and community engagement activities.
The management, principal, faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and industry partners of the institution have expressed pride and gratitude over this achievement. The college reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening quality initiatives and extending accreditation excellence across all its academic programmes in the years to come.
The recognition marks another important milestone in SJEC’s journey towards becoming a centre of excellence in engineering education and producing competent professionals equipped to meet global challenges.
